Student Travel Subsidy Scheme

Eligible students can enjoy concessionary fares offered by MTR Corporation Limited and Sun Ferry Services Company Limited when traveling with MTR and Sun Ferry. Please read the application details and eligibility criteria thoroughly below to ensure you meet the requirements.

Application Arrangements for MTR Student Travel Scheme 2025/2026
To bring students with convenience in applying for the MTR Student Travel Scheme, the MTR’s online application platform will be open for new applications at 10am on 14 August 2025 and for renewal applications on 1 September 2025. Eligible students may complete the application process using a mobile phone or through the MTR website and do not need to queue for endorsement by the University or at the station.

The following materials will help you understand the application procedure. Please read them carefully for full detail. 

Important remark: 
Purchase of the temporary Octopus Card will not be available before application approval. To enjoy the concessionary fares, students are advised to submit their application as soon as the online application platform is open. For students who are holding an approved Personalized Octopus or Personalized Mobile Octopus with "Student Status”, the concession will expire no earlier than 31 October as usual.
Application period

The online application for MTR Student Travel Scheme 2025/2026 is open all year round starting from 14 August 2025 for new applications and 1 September 2025 for renewal applications. Students currently outside Hong Kong may apply upon returning or arrival in Hong Kong. 

Eligibility
  • Students registered in a full-time day course and at the age below 26.
  • Students who are on leave and not paying tuition fee will not be eligible for the scheme until they resume their studies or update their registered student status.
  • “Full-time day course” refers to a day-time course, which typically requires students to attend a recognized local institution for at least 20 hours of academic instruction per week for 30 weeks or more in an academic year.

FAQs on MTR Application

Eligible students should apply for the Scheme via MTR Mobile App or through the online application platform. You are not required to get the school endorsement for online application. You will not get endorsement if you use a hard copy form. 

Complete the form correctly with the information of HKUST below:

  • School Level/Type: Tertiary / Others
  • Region of School:  Kowloon
  • School Name: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Then fill out the faculty / courses that you are studying at HKUST. 

Download the MTR Mobile App in your mobile phone. Otherwise, apply through the online application platform.

Call the MTR Hotline at 2881 8888 from Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 6:30pm; and Saturday 8:30am – 1:00pm. 

It is not required to obtain the eCertificate for MTR Student Travel Scheme unless you do not have any other alternative to verify your HKUST Student status. The eCertificate is valid for other student traveling schemes such as the Sun Ferry Student Monthly Ticket.

There is no rush for you to apply for the Scheme as application is open all year round. You may apply for the Scheme when you arrive in Hong Kong.

Application Arrangement for Sun Ferry Student Monthly Ticket

Sun Ferry Services Company Limited (Sun Ferry) has launched the “Student Monthly Ticket” for ferry services of Central-Cheung Chau and Central-Mui Wo routes, offering concession fares to registered full-time students aged between 12 and 25. Please click HERE for details.

Application Procedure
  1. Applicants should fill out the Online Application Form for the Student Monthly Tickets via the Sun Ferry website and upload the eCertificate* in place of the completed Student Identity Verification Form.

    * HKUST students can generate the eCertificate (Electronic Certificate of Student Travel Scheme) issued by the Dean of Students’ Office as the proof of student identity at HERE. With this eCertificate, applicants are NOT required to complete the Student Identity Verification Form or obtain endorsement from the Dean of Students’ Office in person.
     
  2. Upon successful application, applicants will receive an email titled “Successful Application” from Sun Ferry, which must be presented to the pier staff when making the first purchase.
     
  3. Applicants must use the registered Student Octopus card (The Octopus card number should be completely and clearly visible without anything covering it) to purchase the Student Monthly Ticket. The Student Monthly Ticket is only available for sale at the Customer and Octopus Service Centres at Central Pier No.5, Central Pier No.6, Cheung Chau Pier or Mui Wo Pier. Only cash payments are accepted.
